Illustration Description

The illustration shows gel electrophoresis which is a process that uses an electric current to separate fragments of DNA molecules based on their size.

There are steps to performing gel electrophoresis that have been illustrated A) casting tray, B) pouring a liquefied gelatinous molecule, such as agarose solution into the mould, C) inserting a comb, D) DNA samples, E) once samples are loaded the current is switched on, causing the samples to move through the gel in lanes that grow from each well  F) forming collections of molecules of the same size called bands. The stains will reveal the location of the bands in the gel. Ultraviolet light may be needed to activate the stains.
