Illustration Description
The illustration is a world map showing how the ocean currents around our planet depend of wind, water density and tides. As clean currents flow, they are altered by the Coriolis effect, creating circular ocean currents called gyres. Differences in density cause ocean waters to rise and fall, generating deep ocean currents. Global winds create surface currents by pushing water as it flows. The Gulf Stream brings warm water from the tropical regions of the Caribbean to much for Northern Europe.
